areas in its territory. The region of La Paz - Beni has five
important protected areas: Madidi, Apolobamba, Cotapata, Pilón

Madidi
Location
North of La Paz.
Extension 18.957

Weather
Mainly tropical (cold in the south, near the mountain range).
Description
It is one of the most important protected areas of the world,
due to it high population of wildlife and unspoiled nature.
It´s been cataloged by the National Geographic as one
of the 20 top touristic destinations of the world. 1230 animal
species and 1868 plants live in this place.
Attractions
Lagoon Chalalán, RiverTuichi (great for Rafting) and
its wildlife.
How to get there
expeditions from Rurrenabaque (Beni) or San Buenaventura (La
Paz). There are numerous tours from La Paz and Rurrenabaque.
Apolobamba Location
Northwest of La Paz.

km2
Weather
very cold due to the high altitude, 5°C average. It is
also warm the the area of tha Yungas valleys. The area is
big and has many types of geography.
Description
It is an area of awesome sightseenering, surounded by mountains
and glaciers, lakes and lagoons. It has also valleys in teh
middle. It is home of the endangered Vicuña, a camelid
protected by de bolivian government.
Attractions
The native towns of Charazani and Curva are home of the famous
native doctors Kallawallas, who own the secrets of natural
and traditional medicine. It is also a great place to practice
Alpinism.
How to get there
From La Paz, heading to Sorata and then to Charazani. There
are many tours from La Paz to visit the region.
Cotapata Location
Northeast of La Paz city.

Weather
Mainly warm due to the valleys of Yungas.
Description
this beautiful area has mountains and green valleys with rivers.
Surounding it there are pretty small towns like Coroico and Irupana,
among others.
Attractions
The small towns of Coroico, Irupana, Yanacachi and Tocaña.
The African-bolivian culture that is found in the region and a
great place for coffee lovers. It is an excellent place for practicing
Trekkings, Mountain Bike and Rafting.
How to get there
From La Paz, take a bus to Coroico town. You can also hike the
"Choro trail" that runs inside the park. The Mountain
bike tours also go trough the park.
Pilón Lajas
Location
Southwest of El Beni, East of La Paz.

Weather
Tropical warm and humid.
Population
The native communities of Tsimanes and Mosetenes live in the region.
Description
This area hold the title of Biosfere Reserve and it is also a
place to protecte native cultures. It holds a big range of jungles
and green plains. Many kinds of endangered animals and plants
can be found in the region.
Attractions
Wildife watching, birthwatching. The Tuichi river ends in this
park.

expeditions from Rurrenabaque or San Borja (Beni).
Estación Biológica del Beni Location
In the heart of El Beni

Warm and rainy
Population
The native communities of Chimán and Camba live in the
region. There is also Movina population in the north, another
native community.
Description Beautiful green Amazonas area suronded by
jungle and forests. It has many rivers, swamps and lagoons. Still
unexplored and unspoiled.
Attractions
There are archeological remains of constructions made by the ancient
culture of Moxos. To the south you can reach the river YACUMA
where the pink donphins live. The Normandia Lagoon is a great
place for fishing.
How to get there
Tours from Rurrenabaque, heading to Santa Rosa del Yacuma and
then to the Jungle.

Months of rain: September
to February. best months (colder and dry ) are June, July
and August.
